Carol Cymbala, wife of Pastor Jim Cymbala, was born in Chicago, Illinois. A pastor’s daughter, she was one of six siblings, and very early on she displayed a special gift for music. When Carol was six years old, her family relocated to New York City, where years later her father, the Rev. Clair Hutchins, helped to found The Brooklyn Tabernacle. Carol and Pastor Cymbala were longtime friends. They eventually married and, before long, felt a call to ministry. In the early 1970s they took over leadership of The Brooklyn Tabernacle, a congregation that numbered less than twenty people at the time.

The choir started 40 years ago with just nine members of a struggling nondenominational church housed in a rundown building on Atlantic Avenue near where the Barclays Center now sits. Today, according to its Brooklyn-bred pastor, Jim Cymbala, 69, the choir is almost 300 strong and sings at services each Sunday in the 4,000-seat former Loew’s Metropolitan theater in Downtown Brooklyn. On an average Sunday, he said, 10,000 worshipers can pass through the doors for the three services.

Brooklyn Tabernacle is a non-denominational church located at 17 Smith Street at the Fulton Mall in downtown Brooklyn. It has 16,000 members and is one of the biggest churches in the Greater New York Area. Jim Cymbala has been the pastor of the church for over 40 years.

The church is noted for its Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, which is directed by Carol Cymbala, the wife of Jim Cymbala.

The Brooklyn Tabernacle was established in 1847 as the Central Presbyterian Church, using the facilities of the First Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Willoughby Street and Pearl. Their first building was a frame tabernacle on the corner of State and Nevins Streets, beginning April 3, 1853. The first tabernacle was destroyed by fire in 1869. The second Brooklyn Tabernacle was built in 1873 at the corner of Marcy and Jefferson. This tabernacle was destroyed during a thunderstorm in 1889. The third tabernacle, built at the corner of Clinton Avenue and Greene Street seated 6,000 persons and was destroyed by fire in 1894, but was then rebuilt at the same location.

By the time Pastor Jim and Carol Cymbala took over the leadership in the autumn of 1971, the congregation had dwindled to just 30 people who met in a rundown building on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.

In the 1980s, the Brooklyn Tabernacle purchased the former Carlton Theatre at 292 Flatbush Avenue at 7th Avenue, converting the 1383-seat theatre into a church. After many years of decline, the church was revitalized as a non-denominational congregation, and became well-known as the home of the award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. The church remained in this location until 2002 when they purchased and renovated the former Loew's Metropolitan Theatre at 17 Smith Street.

The current building was completely redone by Robert Silman Associates by gutting and renovating the old vaudeville theater for modern worship, and with state-of-the-art acoustics and recording equipment. The sanctuary seats 3,200 people. Two adjacent buildings were converted into offices, classrooms, community service areas, and dining facilities.

The church holds three two-hour services weekly.

In the mid-1970s, Carol began the choir with a group of nine people that began to grow and soon became a vital part of the worship services of The Brooklyn Tabernacle. Always sensitive in trying to select songs that would glorify the Lord, Carol searched continually for appropriate material for the choir. It was just a matter of time before she began to write songs herself, though she had no formal training in music.

Today The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir comprises 280 voices representing people from all walks of life. Carol has written hundreds of songs, 51 of them recorded throughout her 23-album recording history. Her songs have been translated into many languages, carrying the choir’s sound and the gospel message to people all over the world. The choir’s work under Carol’s direction has won five Dove Awards and six Grammy Awards. The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir has been featured at concerts at Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, and Carnegie Hall. The choir also had the honor of singing at the Billy Graham Crusades in Central Park and in Flushing Meadows Park, in New York City. (The latter, held in June 2005, was Billy Graham’s last crusade in New York City.)
